The origin of Yerba mate goes back to the "Guaranis", a Paraguayan, Bolivian, and Uruguayan indigenous tribe who used the tree leaves as a beverage to get energy, a religious object, and a form of currency to exchange with other nations. During their long journeys through the Amazon rainforest, the Spanish conquistadors noticed that the Guaranis had greater resistance and worked better after drinking this sacred drink.

Initially, it was consumed by masticating the leaves and in cold infusions and then, the name "Mate" came much later, when the infusion began to be served in bowls that were formed by hollow the gourd fruit. The word "mati" is a Quichua word and means "calabaza" in Spanish or gourd in English.
